Sometime back in the mid-sixties a young minister by the name of Roy Cumpton got together
with three of his best friends, who were also three brothers, Eldred, Elvin and Melvin Crawford,
and began singing and playing music together. These guys' parents were also close friends.
Eventually other churches began requesting for them to come and sing in their church. This was
the beginning of a country gospel group they called "The Gospel Sounds."
Not long after, a good friend, Larry Moore, from Mer Rouge, Louisiana, began to play the
piano and organ with the group. A few years later Bearl Wheeler began playing the lead guitar
for the group.
There were many miles of pulling a utility trailer and singing along with some well-known people.
Afterward, when Eldred became sick and later went home to be with the Lord, a quartet was formed, called
the "New Life Quartet" which lasted around twelve years.
In 2000, the group re-formed and "The Gospel Sounds" was re-established. Today the Gospel Sounds
sing as a trio with Roy Cumpton singing lead and playing the keyboard, Elvin Crawford singing tenor,
Ray Lee singing bass or baritone, Melvin Crawford on the drums and Lavel Borden playing bass guitar,
and occasionally Bobby Lee on steel guitar.
